I like being in control of my own destiny. It’s like having constant accountability for your personal growth. Because when you get right down to the bottom of your barrel, the truth is that your income can only grow to the extent that you do. And all of us have our old and often cumbersome belief systems to contend with in this deep dark place.

My business coach told me the other day that she thinks I forge a battle from time to time between wanting to be an entrepreneur and wanting to let “The MAN” take care of me. I’m sure you too have experienced those times during your work as a business owner where you consider the possibility of what it might be like once again to let someone else worry about your paycheck and your income. This is normal. This is also, of course, opportunity for more growth.

You can’t be brave if you’re not scared; and you can’t grow if everything is handed to you day after day. Sure, you can live in mediocrity for as long as you desire. I guarantee you that no one will notice. Hiding in your cubicle where no one can see you is easy to do. And eventually the walls of that fake little office will begin to stink of the Chinese glue that holds them together. Or maybe they won’t, and what you will find instead is the rest of your life rotting away in neglect.

I realize that not all of you are entrepreneurs. Some who read this will think geez, I like my job, and I enjoy and am passionate about the work I do. To you I say, congratulations, you have found your place in the world and if you are truly content, I am jealous. Because at the root of a good life is contentment. And if you’re grounded enough you can find that anywhere if you are being true to yourself.

The challenge for an entrepreneur like me is that contentment is not grounded in a day job. Contentment for me is the challenge I face every day of staying present with my destiny, my ideas, and my undying pursuit of constant evolution as a human being. I know, that might sound like a bit much, but it is how I feel. Which is why when a client asks me if they can skip their last set, my answer is always the same…

“The degree to which you want to thwart your evolution as a human being is entirely up to you.”
